Pavin Smith Goes Off with 3 Bombs, Ohtani Inches Closer to 50
Pavin Smith's Three-Homer Night
Pavin Smith had a night to remember on Monday, hitting three home runs to power the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 10-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Smith's first homer came in the second inning off Giants starter Alex Wood, a solo shot that gave the D-backs an early 1-0 lead.
He struck again in the fourth inning, this time with a two-run homer off Wood that extended the Arizona lead to 4-0. Smith completed his hat trick in the sixth inning, taking reliever Zack Littell deep for another two-run homer that made it 8-1 D-backs.
Ohtani Keeps Rolling
Shohei Ohtani continued his historic season on Monday, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in the Los Angeles Angels' 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Ohtani's homer, a solo shot off White Sox starter Lucas Giolito in the second inning, was his 49th of the season.
He is now just one home run away from becoming the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in the same season. Ohtani also added a double and a walk to his stat line on Monday, raising his batting average to .279 and his OPS to 1.071.
Smith's Breakout Season
Smith's three-homer game was his second of the season, and he now has 24 home runs on the year. The 29-year-old outfielder is having a breakout season in Arizona, slashing .292/.373/.589 with 64 RBIs in 106 games.
Smith was acquired by the Diamondbacks from the Miami Marlins in a trade last offseason, and he has quickly become a key part of their lineup. He is a versatile player who can play all three outfield positions, and he has also provided some much-needed power to the D-backs' offense.
Ohtani's Historic Chase
Ohtani's chase for 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases is one of the most exciting storylines in baseball this season. He is on pace to become just the second player in MLB history to reach both milestones, joining Barry Bonds who did it in 1996.
Ohtani has been one of the most dominant players in baseball this season, both as a hitter and a pitcher. He is currently leading the American League in home runs, RBIs, and OPS, and he is also 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA on the mound.
