The Potential Role Of Flaxseed In Sex Hormone Balance

The Potential Role of Flaxseed in Sex Hormone Balance

Introduction

Flaxseed, a rich source of lignans, has garnered attention for its potential role in modulating sex hormone levels. While some studies have suggested that flaxseed supplementation may influence these hormones, the evidence has been inconsistent.

To address this ambiguity, a recent clinical case study investigated the impact of flaxseed supplementation on hormonal levels in a 31-year-old woman. Additionally, a randomized controlled trial involving 99 postmenopausal women examined the effects of flaxseed on circulating sex hormones.

Clinical Case Study and Randomized Controlled Trial

The clinical case study revealed no significant alterations in testosterone and SHBG concentrations after flaxseed supplementation. In contrast, the randomized controlled trial reported a non-significant increase in SHBG levels and a significant decrease in free androgen index (FAI) after flaxseed consumption.

Association with Breast Cancer Risk

Research suggests an association between lignan intake, particularly from flaxseed, and a reduced risk of breast cancer. This finding is supported by studies demonstrating the anti-estrogenic effects of flaxseed lignans.

Conclusion

While the evidence suggests that flaxseed may have a role in sex hormone balance, further research is needed to clarify its specific effects on different populations and to establish the optimal dosage and duration of supplementation.
